After a lovely picnic they got to climb on the amazing outdoor climbing area. This was Reception's longest distance trip and it was very exciting travelling on a big coach!

Year 3 and 6 visit the Chantries

14 September 2011

Early on Monday morning, despite the clouds, wind and rain, Years 3 and 6 headed off to Pewley Down for a day of outdoor learning. The main reason for going was to make sure the buddy pairs really got to know each other. The weather soon cleared and a fantastic day was had by all, building dens, inventing stories, playing games, and taking part in a nature treasure hunt.

Christmas Science

19 December 2011

Year 6 received a request from Santa to investigate more effective methods of transport for his Christmas deliveries. They had to consider all the forces operating on a wheeled vehicle travelling down a slope, finding out how far various vehicles rolled and varying the angle, the weight carried and the surface travelled over. Apparently BMWs and Lotuses were very efficient! Rudolph might want to disagree!

Year 6 Visited by Guildford Flames

15 January 2012

Two members of the Guildford Flames Ice Hockey Squad visited Year 6 last week to explain the thrills of the game, and also emphasise the importance of a healthy lifestyle. They showed us how well protected they are on the ice rink and talked about the efforts they go to to stay fit and healthy. The children enjoyed trying out their kit and were wowed by an action DVD of the team on ice. They were an inspiration for us all!

Mr Men Day

18 January 2012

Willow Class had a Mr Men Day! Many of them came to school dressed up or wore bright colours. They made Mr Men models, had a go at writing some of the character names and designed their own Mr Men character on the computer. It was part of a special treat that they had chosen after collecting 10 smilies for great co operation and team work. Well done Willow!

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory

06 January 2012

When we came back to school we spent 2 days being inventors for Willy Wonka. We had to apply for a job first. We thought about what sweets we like and why; we designed and made sweets and their wrappers; we went in the great glass elevator to different rooms in the factory and thought about what we would see, hear and smell in that room. This really tested our descriptive vocabulary! We even made a special cake and some honeycomb too.

On Thursday morning we all enjoyed some fantastic performances during the House Music Medley assemblies. There were a wonderful array of acts and so much talent! Huge congratulations to everyone who took part.

Year 2 Where the Wild Things Are

16 January 2012

Week Commencing 9th January 2012
Having heard the story Where the Wild Things Are, we have spent time thinking about what our own wild thing would look like and be like. We coloured in pictures and drew our own wild things to help use 2 describing words to describe it’s skin, eyes, ears, feet etc.

WildThingsA.jpg

Week Commencing 16th January 2012
This week we have thought about telling our own story. We have imagined where we would go, how we would get there, who we would meet and what would happen. Each part of the story has been brought to life with role play, puppets, dressing up, construction, atlases, different types of transport etc. before we sit down to write our adventure.

Pond Repairs

23 January 2012

The Pewley pond developed a big leak and so thanks to FOPS it is being repaired.

Dave has carefully saved all the pond creatures and when he has put in the new liner and replaced all the stones he will introduce the creatures to their new home. He is going to build a special beach at one end of the pond to allow the pond creatures to climb in and out easily. We are looking forward to pond dipping again once the pond creatures have settled in!

Year 6 Creative Writing

03 February 2012

Year 6 were inspired to write with deep emotion and created beautiful imagery after talking about some mysterious artefacts (including a bag of gold coins, a blood stained shirt, red lace and a love letter) and then hearing Alfred Noyce's poem "The Highwayman."

The Highwayman has just heard that Bess, the landlord’s daughter has died; the Highwayman's love. Her soul gone from the world.

His anger flared up, no reason to live, an empty hole in the middle of his stomach. Night falls and a storm rages up, as he rides through the night, climbing off his horse he shrieks at the heavens silence, the storm ends abruptly, like God answered the howling himself the night as black as the scales on a dragon.

Gently, silently, he lays Bess's body in a dirty damp ditch; he scrabbles at dirt angrily, letting the anger bubble inside him, oblivious to the rain hammering down upon them. Slowly, silently he reaches for the knife in his pocket, feeling its sharp blade he feels their presence. The killers, the bloodthirsty killers, ready to pounce; he punched the blade into his stomach, screaming in agony. He falls silently his spirit slips away, not giving the murderers a chance to destroy another life. He looks up; the last thing he sees is the moon, shining like a star.

By George 6C

He heard them before he saw them. The sound of boots on the cobbles, and the bang of gloved hands on the window. Slowly the landlord opened the door for the men of King George. They stormed through the house, ignoring him. Instead they sat, drinking his ale, and smoking his pipes.

Pushed into a corner, he looked on, astonished, confused, until through the  door came Tim. Tim, the ostler.

As Tim told him, he imagined the scene. He stared out the grimy window, seeing his Bess and the Highwayman. He almost heard the Highwayman's words and he wanted to cry out, but his voice had gone.

His heart, body and soul filled with rage. Bess, his daughter, his life, had betrayed him, disobeyed him.

A shot rang out. He froze. Then he ran up the stairs, two at a time. He stopped in the doorway. In the window stood Bess, her head framed with a halo of moonlight, her breast drenched with blood, her finger on the trigger of a gun.

By Naomi 6C

I'm the landlord's daughter, the landlord's black-eyed daughter, with a dark red love knot in my long black hair. As I waited and waited, waiting for my Highwayman to come riding out of the moonlight, I kept my love a secret as I love this man.

I heard in the distance King George's men come marching. They didn't say a word to my father; they drank his ale instead. They gagged me and bound me to the foot of my narrow bed. I twisted my hands behind me, but all the knots held good!

I writhed my hands until my fingers were wet with sweat or blood.

We worked in groups to follow a recipe to make pancakes. When we had made the mix, Christine helped us cook them.

Our pancake mix made 6 pancakes. We worked out what ingredients and how much mixture we would need to make a pancake for everyone in the class and then for everyone in the year group – it really made our brains ache!

We had pancake races and enjoyed eating the pancakes we didn’t drop!

Year 4 were brilliant down in Guildford High Street where we cheered on others and participated in the annual pancake races.

We have been finding out about Shrove Tuesday and why people eat pancakes.

How clean is your water? Year 4 have been experimenting on how to filter dirty water.  The children investigated how they could use a filter system to make their water clean using only sand, gravel, stones, cotton wool and a 2 litre bottle. The results were quite outstanding and captured the children’s imagination – they can’t wait to plan their own alternative filtration investigation!

Reversible? Irreversible?

That is the question! In year 4 we have been investigating the properties of different products, trying to find out if the go through reversible or irreversible changes. We used candles to heat up the products and then let them cool. We observed the process and kept notes on any changes we saw.

Year 6 contemplate the Stations of the Cross at Wintershall

27 March 2012

Year 6 had a wonderful visit to Wintershall last Tuesday. They spent the morning reflecting on Jesus' journey to the Cross then wrote some stunning poetry and prayers.

Wintershall Poem

Scared, humiliated, defenceless Jesus carried the death defying cross through the town of Jerusalem, with people, abusive people lining the streets, shouting "if you're the son of God save yourself", but Jesus did nothing. He just staggered along the dusty path with pain and suffering. His face covered with blood and sweat. For a moment there was hope and love, from a kind lady bearing a damp cloth to wash his face with. Jesus came to the end, his time was near, he knew he had to save us from our sins.

Year 4 Basket Making

20 April 2012

We have been learning about Moses’ life from a baby, found in the bulrushes, to an adult and the leader of the Hebrew people.  We made Moses baskets in different shapes and styles.  Then we tested them to see if they would float with our own baby ‘Gummy Bear’ inside!

Year 4 'Let My People Go'

20 April 2012

We have been learning about the story of Moses.  God spoke to Moses and told him to return to Egypt to ask Pharaoh to free the Hebrew people.  Pharaoh refused, so God sent ten plagues, the final one being death.  The Hebrew people were protected because they painted their doorways with the blood of a lamb and the plague ‘passed over’ them.  We tried to come up with a plan that would work for the Egyptians, Moses and the Hebrew people.  We decided that a compromise needed to be made.

Year 2 Dinosaur Dig

25 April 2012

Year 2 made an incredible discovery!  We received a letter from the Natural History Museum telling us about a palaeontological dig and amazingly managed to unearth dinosaur bones at the Wild Place. We then used this as inspiration for writing some fantastic dinosaur stories.  We hope you enjoy them!

Group 1 Dinosaur Story
One boring Tuesday morning, something mysterious and awkward happened.

We got a letter from Doctor A. Doug A. Hole from the dinosaur museum.

When we received the letter we felt nervous and excited because we didn’t know what was happening…

We tip toed to the Wild Place in the pouring rain!

At the Wild Place we were excited to discover dinosaur bones. We imagined that they were going to come alive! If they came alive we would feel, anxious, nervous, shocked and scared because it would be a miracle!

Most extraordinarily the scariest, spikiest, creepiest dinosaur appeared. It took me on its back and ran up the tallest, greenest, bumpiest tree and ate me in one gulp.

Next the scary, giant, dinosaur walked back to school and tried to eat the other children at playtime.

Eventually the most forbidden dinosaur ran into the school and started chasing the kids.

While the children were running back they were screaming, Richard tried to shoo the dinosaur away.

Next Richard turned into a ginormous friendly dinosaur!

After that the big, friendly dinosaur, Richard, swallowed the giganotosaurus and it came out as poo!

Meanwhile the pointy nosed dinosaur felt embarrassed because he didn’t think he could be eaten by a human!

The other dinosaur didn’t want to be eaten by Richard so was really kind.

Finally, Mr Terry sweept up the stinky, smelly poo and popped it down the sewer. Richard felt sick because when he turned back into a human he looked like a chubby, young octopus.

What a day! It has been crazy and puzzling. We feel wiped out and tired. The day went from boring to shocking and exciting!

Group 2 Dinosaur Story

It was a windy, rainy and normal Tuesday and we were all utterly bored! Little did we know that today would turn out to be so exciting.

We got a letter from Dr Dig.  The letter said there was something in the wild place.  It was a mystery.  We felt very excited and lucky.  We arrived at the scene and we could see a huge, deep and muddy pit.  I wondered if there were 1000 dinosaur bones down there.  We lightly, slowly and carefully brushed the mud away and uncovered white delicate bones.

Suddenly the ground began to shake and the fattest, chubbiest, grumpiest dinosaur in the entire universe appeared, held my hand and asked me to marry him!

Then I screamed back and said “I’m sorry I can’t marry you I’ve already got a boyfriend!” After that big angry scary dinosaur tried to kiss me with his slimy slobbery lips and I got covered in dinosaur slime and blood because he was a carnivore.  Next I ran extremely fast towards the train station with the furious dinosaur charging after me. I hopped on the fastest train ever to Africa because the dinosaur couldn’t cross the sea.  However when we got to the sea there was a dark tunnel with angry and hungry dinosaurs surrounding it.  I was shocked and terrified!  I didn’t say I word I just stood there with my mouth wide open and stared.  I didn’t know what to do.

The train was going backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards trying to escape from the dinosaur.  Eventually the enormous, scary, ugly dinosaur picked up the train and chucked it all the way back to Guildford.  I felt worried as the train flew through the sky!  It landed with a crash and a thump right by Pewley Down school.  The dinosaur looked sad and asked if he could be my friend.  I said yes and we got married in the school.  I wore a white summer dress and the dinosaur looked hansom and wore a suit.  However I didn’t want to be always married to a dinosaur so I secretly dug an enormous deep pit on the field.  The dinosaur was walking up the field when it fell into the pit and vanished.  I was sad that the adventure was over but happy that I wasn’t married any more.  I went home and had a cup of tea and a piece of chocolate cake and told my mum all about it.  The end!

Group 3 Dinosaur Story
It all started one normal Friday morning while we were sitting on the carpet. Ruth came rushing in with a letter. It was very surprising to see her. She gave the letter to Rosie who read it out. It was from the Natural History Museum! Dr Doug was asking for help to find some bones at the Wild Place.

After Rosie had asked Richard if he knew about the letter we went to get ready for the Wild Place. We were all excited.

Then we walked to Wild Place. Suddenly we saw a gazebo – we were very excited because we didn’t know what was going to be there and how we were going to find the bones.

As we stood under the gazebo Thabo told us what to do. We couldn’t wait to get started.  We started digging carefully getting the soil away from the bones.  It was a very tricky job but we were full of energy and courage.

Unbelievably the most extraordinary thing happened while we were digging. The dinosaur bones built themselves up again and grew skin and I saw the biggest, scariest and most orange eye staring at us. Suddenly the dinosaur turned around, charged at us and roared loudly in our faces. His breath smelled like rotten meat. We were so scared we were frozen to the spot. We wanted to run away but we couldn’t move. The dinosaur took no notice of us and turned away so finally we could take a breath.

While the huge, spiky dinosaur was munching some enormous leaves a cute, tiny, brightly coloured dinosaur appeared out of the bushes, crying because no one was playing with him. However we were still too nervous and anxious to take any notice of him so we hid in the gloomy, forbidden area. After that we could hear giant footsteps that made the ground shake!

Suddenly 3 mini dinosaurs walked shyly towards me and I was shocked to hear them speak. They said ‘It’s ok, it’s just our mama and she is gentle & caring.’ I was relieved and happy  so I went to meet her and stroked her cold, bumpy skin.

Meanwhile some people went to the fish & chip shop to get some meat & chips to make friends with the dinosaurs.

Finally the dinosaurs followed us back to school for lunch but there was no room in the hall so they had to eat in the playground. We thought they might fell left out so we went outside too.

Group 4 Dinosaur Story
On a cold, windy Friday morning I was sitting on the floor when Ruth rushed in with a letter from the Natural History Museum.  I felt excited because I didn’t know what was going to happen.  After Rosie read the letter, I got even more excited but I was also a bit worried and nervous.
We set off for the Wild Place but I didn’t know what we would find.  When we got near I saw a gazebo and some shimmering, yellow, safety ribbons.  It made me feel so shocked and surprised.  What was it hiding?

We started uncovering the bones by carefully brushing the soil out of the way.  Seeing the bones start to appear in the dirt made me feel amazed and puzzled.

Unexpectedly the tallest, heaviest, most amazing dinosaur that had ever been seen appeared out of nowhere.  It swiped it’s giant tail around the gazebo and tore it to the ground.  I was feeling so terrified that I screamed my head off and jumped out of my skin.

After that I ran away into the woods and climbed up the tallest tree around.  From where I was sitting I could hear the dinosaur crying loudly so I got down from the tree to ask what  the matter was .  He whispered “I’m not actually a mean dinosaur, I just want to be friends!”.  I felt relieved and excited!  Next I climbed onto his sharp, pointy back and he took me back to school.  When we got there everyone screamed because they were petrified.

Unusually, the dinosaur stamped heavily straight into the kitchen because he was starving.  It was Friday so he thought everything would be made of fish fingers!  He tried to eat  the whole kitchen and even the cooks.
Later, in the hall, the children heard a rumbling roar.  The dinosaur had discovered the kitchen wasn’t fish fingers!  The roar made the children faint in their dinners which went SPLAT.

After that, Nicola told the dinosaur to sit on a table if he wanted some lunch.  Because he was so enormous he didn’t see the children and accidentally sat on the reception children squashing them flat!
When the panic ended, Thabo told the dinosaur that he was going to have to replace all of the squashed children with dino eggs.

After the holidays I came back to school.  When I walked into assembly I saw 60 tiny, baby dinosaurs wearing school uniforms.  I was shocked and confused but also excited.  This was going to be awesome.

Year 4 Bluebells

25 April 2012

The wind couldn’t stop us! The rain couldn’t stop us! The mud couldn’t stop us! On Monday Year 4 went onto the wet and windy North Downs in search of the beautiful and under threat British Bluebell. Hazel class made some fabulous minibeast collages at the Wild Place this week using natural resources.  Can you spot a spider, a stag beetle, a centipede and two butterflies?  We had a lovely time and enjoyed the walk in the rain as well as being creative at the Wild Place.  "This is the best day ever ... because I love the puddles and I love the mud!" said one smiley four year old!

Year 3 Evacuee Day

Year 3 dodged the rain on Tuesday to walk around different areas of Guildford to find out how they had been affected by the war. On their way the children met a number of different characters who were able to give true accounts of all that had happened. They arrived at London Road Station as evacuees and finally ended up in the school hall where they were billeted to their families. It was a really exciting and informative adventure, with your children behaving fantastically!

Holy Trinity Pupils Hear All About the War Years

08 May 2012

Pupils at Guildford’s Holy Trinity School dressed as wartime evacuees and enjoyed a field trip to find out about Guildford during the Second World War.

The Year 3 pupils have been studying the wartime period and how people in Guildford were effected. One of their study aids has been the book Guildford The War Years by Graham Collyer and David Rose.

The book (published by Breedon Books in 1999) contains a number of eyewitness accounts of events between 1939 and 1945, such as air raids, rationing, evacuees from London, the Home Guard and peace celebrations. One of those who contributed his memories was Alderman Bernard Parke, who was a small child when war broke out.

He was invited by Holy Trinity School to meet up with the pupils and their teachers as part of their field trip. One of the places they went to was Stoke Park, where, on April 17, 1943, two RAF Mustang aircraft crashed after they had collided in mid air during a training exercise. Both pilots were killed in the accident.

They listed intently as Mr Parke told them his recollections of the incident and some of the wartime hardships endued by local children all those years ago.
