HTPD 26/4/19

26 April 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been just great seeing the whole school at work this week. I hope you all felt glad to be back after a relaxing Easter break! What a fantastic school community - all determined to live life to the full! Our whole staff spent a really productive INSET day, working in teams to evaluate how well we’re doing at living out our school vision, “Learn to Live”, as well as developing our exciting curriculum and the Reception team heading out and about visiting another Surrey school to glean some great ideas! It reminded me of how enthusiastic all our teachers and support staff are – they are so determined to be lifelong learners!

That proved a perfect springboard for the first week back where our assembly theme looked beyond Easter to Pentecost when the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, turning from timid, nervous friends of Jesus to be the emboldened messengers who established the early church. It reminded us all about being passionate and enthusiastic; just right for the first day of term!

This term in our assemblies, we’re learning about the life of the Apostle Paul as he takes the good news of Jesus’ love beyond the confines of Jerusalem out into the rest of the world. Each week, the children will hear tales of shipwreck, imprisonment and persecution as Paul bravely stands up for what he believes in. Running alongside, there is a focus on the natural world with a tree species helping us to make links to the theme each week and Recycle Man helping us to think about our caring for our beautiful planet! Do take a look at the assembly slides each week if you’d like to.

Keep a close eye on the JTLYK pages too this term – there are so many events in the diary already and we are keen that you can take part in some of them too. We always love to have parents help out on Fluffy Friday which this term is on May 24th. Do let your child’s class teacher know if you can join us for some or all of the day; if you’d like to lead an activity with a small group get in touch with Helen (helenp@htpd.surrey.sch.uk). It’s always great to have a wide range of different activities on offer.

Lots of the children have been enjoying the outdoors already this term. Year 4 certainly made the most of our beautiful environment, visiting the bluebells in the Chantries and “seeing heaven in the moment”. If you haven’t made it there yet this season, maybe take a stroll this weekend before they’re passed their best. It will certainly give you cause to be positive!

With best wishes,
Clare

Thought of the week: It’s rubbish…being negative. How can you be more enthusiastic?

Parking
With the better weather, think about walking to and from school, or maybe parking up slightly further away. This will reduce congestion and pollution around the school sites. Please make sure that you park respectfully too, without blocking our local residents’ driveways. Even blocking access for a short time can cause unnecessary inconvenience and stress. One of our neighbours was recently unable to get to a seriously ill relative due to a car parked across their entrance. Please think about other people, even when you’re in a rush.

HTSC News

Welcome back. Last term of fundraising - so please give it one final push for the year!

There’s a meeting in the staff room on Friday after drop off to talk about any ideas for the school fair! If you can’t ever make the evening sessions this might work better for you. We really appreciate everyone who turns up and we love hearing your ideas!!

There’s the Sainsbury’s scheme which is one of the easiest ways to raise money for the school while just doing your normal shop. Details are on the ParentMail from this week, and in the flyers last term, but do please get in touch if you need help setting it up. It really is free money for the school.

Phil The Bag is back next week, so if you’ve had a Spring clear out over Easter, we’ll take what we can!

You can leave your unwanted items at the bottom of the internal ramps at HT from Monday 29 April until 9am on Friday 3 May.

Phil the Bag no longer provides bags to fill, so please use ordinary bin liners. The more bags we collect, the more money we raise. The school receives 35 pence for every kilo we manage to collect, that’s £350 per tonne - so every item of clothing counts!

Please note that Phil the Bag does not accept blankets, duvets, bric-a-brac, pillows, sleeping bags, rugs, carpet, offcuts of fabric, any WET items, tent canvas, soft toys and no ripped or stained clothing. Please also bear in mind that the clothing is for re-use so should be in a wearable condition.

Smarties Challenge - please rerun any Smarties tubes by Monday, filled with whatever coins or notes you can. It’s all going towards iPads for the class rooms.

There’s still time time to enter the Fun Run too. So please do. It’s going to be a great day for the whole family. Sunday 19th May at Sutherland Park

Hope to see you all on Friday.

Surrey Arts would like to invite all young musicians to come along and try out some of the local ensembles at their open evening on Wednesday 1st May. All rehearsals take place at Tillingbourne school and the open rehearsal and first term is free. Expert tutors will be on hand to help, just bring along your instrument! For more information, please contact Alison Harding - Alison.harding@surreycc.gov.uk . Flyer attached for more details:

The Charity SMEF

05 April 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a busy end to the term we’ve had! Just last week, over 40 children took part in the annual primary music festival which was a wonderful spectacle of talented music-making, then on Tuesday we all enjoyed a day spent at a slower pace, with our annual Easter Pause Day. It was amazing to see how many of Guildford’s churches joined in and helped out! Huge thanks go to St Saviour’s, Emmaus Road, Christ Church, Guildford Family Church, Guildford Baptist Church and King’s Church. Together they helped us tell the story of Easter. Then on Wednesday, we celebrated our end of term service at Holy Trinity. It is always a lovely opportunity for the whole school, Year R to Year 6 to be in one place. The singing was just fantastic as we reminded each other that because Jesus overcame death, we can live life to the full!

Thanks to the generosity of our local town councillors who gave us a grant of £1000, we’ve been able to invite SATRO (an organisation that exists to inspire children and young people into science, technology, engineering and maths careers) into school. They ran exciting sessions for the children in Year 5, teaching them all about the world of energy.

Meanwhile, seeing the Year 4 exhibition of crazy inventions, the high quality topic work from children across the school, and the beautiful Easter gardens created by children at both sites, I think our children are definitely the entrepreneurs, designers and engineers of the future!

As the holidays begin, I wish you all a restful break and a very Happy Easter! Looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday 24th April for the start of the summer term!

With best wishes, Clare

FOPS

We have reached the end of a fantastic Spring term and would like to thank all of you for the wonderful support and help you have given us this term. Lots of money has been raised and it would not be possible without the support of the Pewley Down School community.

There are plenty of events coming up in the Summer Term and we can’t wait to share them with you all.
Have a peaceful Easter Break!

HTSC

Congratulations to all the prize winners from the library crowdfunded. Your prizes are at the office. Thank you again for everyone who contributed and Cavenders for the prizes.

You should find a leaflet about the Sainsbury’s scheme lurking in your child’s bag! Please consider using it. It’s super simple, free to you and free money to us! Sainsbury’s gives us 4% of everything you spend. You pay it onto a gift card that has to be used in store, even if you save it up for Christmas goodies, it all helps!

Smarties Challenge - your child should have received a tube of smarties from us recently. This is the perfect size to collect 20 pence pieces. If you can, please fill this over the Easter break and return it to school (any change or paper money is welcome!). All monies raised will go towards replacing the class IPads.

And how about registering for the fun run and run off those Easter chocolates? Registration is still open and it’s a great family day out!

Next HTSC meeting is on Friday 10th May in the staff room after drop off. Come and say hi, chat summer fair and generally catch up. It’s open for everyone and we really appreciate your input and support.

And finally don’t forget while you’re enjoying your Easter break, Phil the bag will take any clothes/sheets/towels you sort out, and the Plant Stall at the fair any seedlings or divided plants

Happy Easter 🐣
