No. 244

17 December 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you so much for all your Christmas greetings, kind words, as well as generous gifts, both to me and to the whole staff. We’re so grateful! With the holidays starting today, it’s lovely to reflect on how well the whole school community has worked together for the good of the children over the last few months. I hope you feel, as I do, that it’s been a great term of learning! I’m also so appreciative to everyone for following all the guidance around covid - every child that’s stayed at home when it was required, every test that’s been taken, every family that’s helped to keep the whole school safe, every little sacrifice that’s been made, it’s really helped. It’s been wonderful this week to celebrate Christmas together, lighting all four candles on the Advent wreath, singing together (albeit outdoors!), sharing presents and having Christmas fun. Despite not being able to visit Holy Trinity church for our annual Christmas carol service, children from Year 2 to Year 6 took part in a memorable assembly on Zoom. I thought you might like to read one of the prayers that was written by a child in Year 4:

Dear God,
Thank you for the life that we have here. Thank you for the world, for enough food, for shelter. Thank you for friendship and especially thank you for our pets! We all appreciate what you have done for us. Every day, you look after us and make us happy. We thank you.
Amen.

The children in Year 5 read poems that they’d written about light, reflecting on Jesus being “The Light of the World”:
Light is the wonder of the world.
It smells like freedom, it tastes like Christmas Day.
Light is joy. It sounds like laughter.
Light is the hope that unlocks the door to happiness.
It feels like life has come.

On that note, I’d like to wish you all a very happy Christmas – and look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year. Children start back on Wednesday 5th January, with it being likely that our current restrictions and year group bubbles remaining in place. If that changes, I’ll be in touch – but I’m pretty confident that schools will be kept open if at all possible.

With love and prayers for a safe, healthy and Happy Christmas,
Clare

10 December 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Looking back to last Saturday and our winter fair, I can’t believe how lucky we were with the weather! The first school fair for two years, and we were so fortunate to be able to enjoy time outdoors in winter sunshine - especially as it has rained pretty much every day since! Thank you so much to everyone who helped to organise the event, run stalls, donate prizes, and even tidy up afterwards. We’re so grateful to both HTSC and to FOPS for their energy and commitment to the school. Both committees ensured that we raised thousands of pounds for the children’s benefit (I’m not sure what the final total is yet!), as well as providing us all with a super community event to enjoy. Thank you so much to everyone for your generosity!

This week, the school has been alive with the sound of singing and there have been costumes galore. Despite only being able to work in year group bubbles, the Christmas shows have been a superb whole school effort! Well done to all our performers, and also to our fantastic staff team for not accepting defeat when live audiences were cancelled. I know that you’ll enjoy the final filmed versions when they’re available. I think Pewley’s “The Angel who nearly missed it all” is ready to be shared with you; it’s just great! I especially enjoyed the song “we’ve got a feeling everything will turn out right” – such a lovely message of hope to us all.

Meanwhile Holy Trinity families will need to wait a little longer for the final editing to be completed, but you can look forward to it being available before term ends next Friday. Year 6 have been really immersed in the story of the show – “the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe” has stimulated plenty of super discussion in class with much debate about the similarities between Aslan and Jesus. The children have been struck by the way that both demonstrate sacrificial love and wield great power with authority and yet compassion - the “deep magic”. As we look ahead to the Christmas holidays when Christians celebrate Jesus coming to earth and rejoice that God walked with us rather than being far away, we’ll be spending time in school preparing for our Christmas assembly. We’d usually gather in Holy Trinity Church, but instead we’ll meet on Zoom this year, with contributions, reflections and prayers from across the school. Hopefully, we’ll still be able to make it a meaningful occasion. I feel that the Christmas story is more relevant than ever – God with us, light in the darkness, turning mourning into dancing and sadness into joy.

We had plenty of joy at our Christmas lunches this week; everyone looked very festive wearing their Christmas jumpers, reindeer antlers, elf ears or sparkly hair accessories! It was fun to thank our cooks for the delicious spread with a traditional rendition of “We wish you a merry Christmas” and I loved introducing our children from overseas to brussel sprouts, pigs in blankets and stuffing!

Do remember that we finish early next Friday (1.30 at PD, 1.45 at HT), and we start back for the spring term on Wednesday 5th January. It’s been a super term in spite of the challenges; thank you for all your support and encouragement. We’re so glad to work in partnership with you. Hopefully, Christmas this year will be a little more jolly than last year, with more freedom to enjoy seeing family and less worry about what lies ahead. I’m certainly praying for 2022 to be more straightforward!

With love,
Clare

A massive thank you to everyone who donated, loaned equipment, prepped the tombolas, helped set up, prettied up the playground and of course, to everyone who spent money at the Fair last Saturday. Thank you to our local businesses who donated raffle prizes – the Friary Centre, Melita Fitness, Rumwong, Ye Olde Shippe, Hogsback Brewery, Banu’s Photography, Morden Miniature railway and Koko Hair, as well as the fabulous donations from our parents & carers for the hampers. All the prizes and hampers have been delivered to the winners this week.

No. 242

03 December 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to all of you, and to your children, for being so accepting of the current restrictions and adjustments as we lead up to the end of term. Once again, the children’s adaptability and positive spirit has been excellent. We are still being notified of some children receiving positive covid results so we know that we’ve made the right decision to reduce contact across year groups and keep one another safe. Earlier in the week, we had more than twenty cases across the school, and over one hundred children being tested. Thank you so much for being so determined to keep children with symptoms at home, and thank you for following the guidance so carefully. We really appreciate it.

The Year 3 production of “Wackadoo Zoo” took place on Zoom earlier in the week – despite missing the atmosphere of a live audience, the children were magnificent, performing to the camera like film-stars! It was such a privilege to be able to be an audience of one, and I loved the message of how each one of us is treasured and loved for our unique contribution to the world. Huge apologies if you tried to log in and weren’t able to; I hope you enjoyed watching on Tapestry later on!

Rehearsals for the Christmas shows have also been going really well and filming has commenced. Of course, it’s so disappointing for any children unable to take part due to self-isolation at home. We send them our love and prayers for a speedy recovery. This year, as you know, we’ll be sharing a film version with you to enjoy at home. Whereas usually we take up a retiring collection to cover costs, this year we’re hoping you’ll all be just as generous, but online. Please do make a contribution on Parentpay. Once we’ve paid for the props, lighting and stage hire, we’ll be using any money left over to send Christmas hampers to Besom. This Guildford-based charity provides practical support to families in the town throughout the year, and then sends a selection of treats to show a little extra kindness at Christmastime. Please do make your donation promptly if you’d like to contribute (even before you view the show if you can!) – Besom will be collecting from the school in the final week of term.

Next week, the children will be able to enjoy Christmas dinner (Thursday 9th for Years R-4, Friday 10th for Year 5-6). If they’re not eating school dinner, you might want to make their packed lunch have a Christmas-theme, and all the children can wear a Christmas jumper (or any other jumper) or novelty Christmas hat with their school uniform. There will be hundreds of second hand jumpers available at the Winter Fair! Any £1 donations that come in will be used to buy gifts for distribution by the Guildford Salvation Army; this idea came from the Pewley school council!

I’m sure many of you will be excited to visit the winter fair tomorrow afternoon. I’m afraid there won’t be anything taking place inside this year, so wrap up warm and come along to the Holy Trinity playground; you’ll be able to enjoy the festivities anytime between 12 and 2.30. Warm up with some yummy hot food, or buy some extra lucky, last-minute raffle tickets! I’ll look forward to saying hello to you there, and wishing you the first Happy Christmas of the season!

With love, Clare
