Infant - 6 January

06 January 2012

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and welcome back for the spring term. I do hope you had a great Christmas, taking time to relax with your families.

Now we are back for the all important middle term. This is when children make most measurable progress during the year. So we do hope there is little time lost during this important term.

We are suffering under the difficulty at the juniors of having almost no internet or server connection. This means we are all thrown back on our own resources and it is quite a challenge. Luckily at the infants we are still connected so we upload this newsletter there.

On Tuesday I was working preparing the in-service training for staff the following day. Then we had a five hour power cut. Of course all my work was lost and I had to start again. It’s amazing how dependent we are on power and computer connection and how we are only aware of that when it’s not working.

It reminds me of the old Joni Mitchell song: “Big yellow Taxi” with the line – You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. Maybe if we thought more about this we would cherish friends, family, freedom, health, employment and peace more.

The attitude of being thankful for these things is a great way to enter the New Year. I do hope that it’s a really good one for you and your family.

With Best Wishes
Richard Rowe

Reminder

Dear Parents

We hope to be launching our brand new website this weekend. We are not quite sure when our hosts will actually make it all happen, so check from time to time. I do hope you like it and feel that it gives you access to information that you need. Please could I remind you of the importance of reading the newsletter and checking ‘Just to let you know’ (JTLYK) every week? News stories will be regularly changing with ultimately about a dozen accessed through the home page and older stories in photo archives. I am particularly pleased that our values are placed firmly on the home page so everyone understands what we stand for.

I would be really pleased to receive feedback and suggestions of how we can improve it. A governor has already suggested an alumni page for news of former students and staff. We may also have a guest book for messages from visitors to the site. We are having a hit counter applied to each page so we can see how our message is getting out to people.

There are three people who have worked really hard on this building project. I would like to thank Louise Crow-Arnold for all her hard work in setting up the site and enabling transfer of material. Liz Pomeroy for great photographs and liaison with our professional builders, and Natalie Savage for help with the initial concept and guidance right through the project. I E Marketing based in Bristol have done a great job in putting it all together and responding to all our requests.

Nowadays, a well built website is a vital piece of running a school; providing a window on all its work and activity.
With best wishes. Richard

Headlice
We have had a number of cases of headlice recently, especially in Year 1. Please check your child’s hair and treat if necessary:

  • It is worth checking your child’s hair regularly (once a week) for eggs or lice.
  • If you do find nits give the hair a thorough comb through with a nit comb (the Nitty Gritty Nit Free Comb is particularly effective). A generous application of conditioner also makes the combing easier.
  • Continue to comb through the hair at least every three days for two weeks to ensure that all eggs and lice are eradicated. Otherwise any eggs missed in the first comb through will hatch and the whole cycle will start again.

Nits are a very common problem among primary age children who usually catch them due to close contact with their classmates.

Dear Parents

Facing your fears is the theme of our assembly and thoughtful times next week. The First World War poet, Wilfred Owen, is our hero and our Bible story Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane that he should not have to suffer death on a cross.

Wilfred Owen had to return to the trenches after being invalided out. He was killed just before the armistice.

I wonder what fears you have, rational or irrational? I have to admit to a fear of Ofsted; the thought that someone just coming in for a day or so has the power to seriously criticise years of dedicated hard work by a great team just because the narrow data they measure us by is not as required for a year.

I also fear retirement in a way (though it is still 3 or 4 years away). What will I do? Will it be ok?

Now there are solutions to both those; cool rational thought, careful preparation and mentally being ready for the fear whenever it comes. In this way the fear is changed into a challenge that we know we have the strength to face.

Irrational fears, spiders, feathers, zips, clowns or cats, can be successfully helped by therapy and gradual exposure.

It sometimes falls to us as teachers to talk through some of these matters at school. As a school we tell the children about Jesus, who faced his greatest fear - separation from his Father, God; he finally conquered both fear and death.

So now I need to learn to practise what I preach when I see the men/women in grey suits, armed with clipboards walking down the school drive one Monday morning very soon . . .

With best wishes, Richard

FOPS News

What your money is being spent on ....... !

Thank you for all your support so far this year. We thought it would be good to let you know what FOPS money is being spent on this year. Firstly we donated £500 to each year group to spend on lots of lovely things which have included, for Year R, a wirework igloo (a versatile playhouse for the garden)(role play), a new garage and road track (small world toy), a new dolls house (small world), a bamboo building blocks set for inside (construction), a pre-writing motor skills set (fine motor skills), easi-grip scissors (physical development), colour paddles (science),  pond nets (water play), magnets and magnetic chips (science), a parking sensor!  (ICT and role play) and food colouring catering packs (for making playdough), and for, Year 1, 30 talking points (which are little recording machines for the children to record themselves speaking. They can then play back their recording for others to listen to), 1 big camouflage den set for use outside, a set of 10 headphones to fit the computers , 2 CD players, one for each classroom, with headphones for listening to stories etc.. Year 2 are still currently deciding, but likely spend will include lots more Lego.

A major expense for this year is the re-lining of the school pond, which had sprung a leak. This work is currently underway so that your children will be able to enjoy pond-dipping again in the spring. We have also just approved a large sum of money for a complete overhaul and refurbishment of the Year R area to include the replacement of some very dilapidated ceilings. This will benefit both children and teachers, creating a much more pleasant learning and working environment.

Once again, thank you so much for all your support for FOPS fund-raising and events. The money we raise is being spent to bring lots of lovely extras to your children's learning experience and to support the school's current development plan through refurbishments which benefit everyone.

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY .......  Our next Family Event will be on Saturday 24th March, from 5-8 PM for Pig-Racing and a fish and chip supper, amongst other delights ! Please try and keep the date free for a fun early evening family event. More details to follow .....

Tea Towels
There are still a few Pewley Down tea towels available to buy - £4 each or £10 for 3.

27 January 2012

Dear Parents,

There has been a little confusion recently about homework and if I’m honest I think that I may have been responsible for the confusion.  I suppose it all comes down to definitions.  If we define homework as any school task carried out at home then we certainly do have homework.

I believe that it is really important that some tasks happen at home. This is in order to consolidate learning from school; be confident readers and spellers and know how to research and produce a project from their topic using their resources.

To this end all children will be encouraged to read at home. In the earliest year this will be sharing the books with a parent, moving through to our oldest children, who I hope will be reading age appropriate books for their personal pleasure, as well as to continuing to improve their literacy. Of course, we would still hope that they will read aloud with you and be read to.

Initial spellings will be brought home as well as phonics. After the major and minor spelling rules have been addressed, many of the lists may be connected to words from their topics and learning areas for that week.

As the children move through the school multiplication tables and facts are added into the mix.  Complete recall of tables is a really useful aid to maths and they help the children with mental manipulation of numbers.

Finally in the upper years of the juniors we give children the opportunity to prepare part of their topic as a homework task.

With all these homework tasks, we still want children to have a happy and fulfilling childhood and use their leisure time to the full. Most of these tasks will be on the ‘Just to let you know’ pages.  Please look each week.

So there it is - we do have homework; it is well focused, relevant, useful and not onerous.  I would like to thank all parents for their partnership in their child’s learning.

With best wishes, Richard

Cup stacking, Tuesday 31 January
After last year’s cup stacking success we are running another challenge.  Gemma from County School will be coming in with six of her Sports Leaders (pupils from County) to work with all year groups on a grand cup stacking competition.  The following week we will be having a cup stacking house challenge.  We look forward to lots of stacking fun!

BOOK WEEK, 6-9 February
The School Council are organising a Book Week starting on Monday 6 February.  They have come up with all the ideas for the week and have given them to the teachers.  They have arranged for a local author to come and read to the children and are also leading the week's assemblies.
Things to get involved in:

  • Bedtime story is back on 8 February (5.30-6.15pm) where the children can come back to school in their pyjamas, teddies and blankets in tow to be read a Bedtime story in their Year group.  Parents are invited to wait in the hall and FOPs will be doing tea and coffee.  After last year's success we will also be running a 'Buy a New Bedtime Story' stall.
  • Our 'Extreme Reading' challenge will run from 6-24 February where we would like children (and parents) to bring in photographs of themselves reading in 'unusual' places.  We will put some ideas on the website nearer the time.

Two requests:
Please could we have any donations of good quality children's books for the Bedtime Story sale and children’s magazines for the swap organised by the eco team.

Fluffy Friday, 10 February
You should now have received a letter with details of the fluffy activity choices.  Completed forms should be returned to the office by Thursday 2 February - please ensure that your form is named.
Reception children will not have received the fluffy letter as they will be doing their own activities in the reception classrooms.  All children should come to school in their own clothes (mufti) for Fluffy Friday and we also a request a voluntary £1 contribution to help cover the cost of materials.

Sickness
As you may be aware there is a nasty bug going round at the moment which involves either being or feeling very sick.  If your child has been unwell or is complaining of a tummy ache please keep them at home (and in the case of vomiting or diarrhoea they should not come to school for 48 hours after the last occurrence).   This is to ensure that they are well enough to return and that the infection is not spread to other children.

FOPS News

Next playground cake sale will be on Friday 3 February and will be run by Chestnut class.

Dates for the diary:

  • Saturday 24 March, 5-8 pm – Pig Racing and fish & chip supper.
  • Friday 27 April – Phil the Bag will be calling again at school so keep collecting unwanted textiles, bags and shoes.

Groundhog
Parents have raised concerns regarding the amount of time their children are spending on-line.  We have recently been made aware of a  program called GroundHog  that may help. It is a free, simple to install application that allows parents to limit the time children can access the internet for.  Children can pause their time allocation to eat dinner, do homework etc then return to the remaining time.  It doesn't however allow you to select specific time windows for different days at this stage. There are more sophisticated programs that you can buy if you choose to, but GroundHog is a great starting point to set a daily time limit.
http://mediavention.com/groundhogmain.html
Please let us know if this is helpful or if you have any further concerns.

Research study
A letter has gone out in book bags from Samantha Felthouse, a research assistant at the Institute of Education, University of London.  She is carrying out research looking at younger children’s spatial development and the letter explains this in more detail. If you are happy for your child to take part in this project (which will take place at school)  please return the permission slip at the bottom of the letter.

Computer monitors
Thank you to everyone who brought in a computer monitor in response to our request and especially the Mavani family for their donation.  We have now managed to replace all the monitors that we needed to, so no more are required.

Lunch Cards
Please come up to the office and pay for a new lunch card if your child needs one.  Some children are starting to have quite large amounts of lunch money outstanding.

Junior - 27 January

Infant Newsletter

03 February 2012

Dear Parents,

At both schools this week, we have been thinking about the life and work of Helen Keller, one of our four house heroes.  All four have been chosen as people who symbolise some virtue which we would wish our children to aspire to.

Helen was a normal little girl until she contracted scarlet fever or meningitis at the age of nineteen months.  This left her deaf and blind.

At the age of seven, through the inventor Alexander Graham Bell, she met Annie Sullivan.  Annie was to be her tutor, mentor, companion and friend for the next forty nine years.  Through Annie’s skill and patience and Helen’s perseverance, Helen learnt signing for words on her hands.  This gave her language and the ability to communicate.
Later, after obtaining a university degree, she learnt to speak and to understand what people were saying by touching their lips, Braille was a great help to her.

She spent her life making speeches and supporting various causes.  She was an advocate for people with disabilities and also spoke about pacifism, woman’s suffrage, birth control and radical socialism.

She wrote books, met presidents and kings and led a full life which made a real difference to others.

Her faith, drive, perseverance and trust of others drove her life forward when others might have given in faced by such difficulties.

Helen is truly a hero and we hope our children will take on board her strengths and become people who’s lives make a positive difference to others.

With best wishes, Richard

Infant Newsletter

10 February 2012

Dear parents

Another Fluffy Friday, this time with a few centimetres of lovely, fluffy snow to play with.  I have just come in from playground duty with the juniors where the children left on site were enjoying safe and happy snowballing and sledging.

We have had groups of infants ‘Out and About’ on the Downs, where they may well have bumped into the extreme campers from the juniors.  Other groups outside include feathers and frogs, a winter walk and all you can do in the snow with Henry.

In the warm there is a lego option at both sites.  Cooking at the infants is peppermint mice and at the juniors, jammy dodgers and valentine cakes.  The valentine theme is also at Pewley Downs, with the opportunity to make valentine cards for your sweetheart!

More unusual activities include writing Dr. Who scripts, making scratch videos and floral art.

It really is a great day of working within the environment and being introduced to new skills.  These ways of learning do open up our children to the idea that learning can go way beyond the National Curriculum.  We hope that in this way we will encourage them to become life-long learners who lead lives which open up to new possibilities.

I have had to cancel my holiday in France as the weather is freezing with dangerous roads in the Dordogne.  So I have a week of unexpected time – I wonder what new possibilities will open up for me?

With best wish for a great half term.
Richard

Copies of Richard’s book are available to buy from the office at a cost of £6.99. 50% of all profits will be going to Railway Children (a charity which works with vulnerable children living on the streets in the UK and abroad).

Extreme Reading challenge

Don't forget to send in your pictures of reading in unusual places for our board. We've had some fantastic ones already. The challenge runs until 24 February so there’s plenty of time over half term.

Dear Parents

During this week various classes throughout the school have made pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday – Pancake Day.  Year 4 children represented the school in the traditional annual pancake race in Guildford High Street and their picture is on the front page of the Surrey Advertiser!

On the following day we marked Ash Wednesday where juniors had the option of receiving the Mark of the Cross on the back of their hands as a symbol of being sorry for the wrong in our lives and being thankful for God’s love and forgiveness.  This day marks the beginning of Lent when the church remembers Jesus’ time in the wilderness where he was tempted.  It’s a good time for thinking about ourselves and what is important.

Children at HTPD are very good at thinking in this way and excellent at being meditative.  Our weekly thoughtful class times really encourage the children to take time out to consider the big questions of life and its meaning.

Our hero this week was Eric Liddell, the champion Olympian of Paris, 1924.  This story was told in the film ‘Chariots of Fire’.  Liddell refused to bow to pressure to compete on a Sunday as it went against his desire to treat Sunday as a day of rest.  The children thought about what is important to them and what they would like to achieve.  Our Bible story this week was about Isaiah and his writings.  We linked this with what Eric Liddell preached about in Paris.  “Even young people tire and become exhausted, but those who honour God get fresh strength.  They spread their wings and soar like eagles.  They run and don’t get tired, they walk and don’t faint”.  Great verses to take into Lent, whether we are attempting to give up chocolate once again or not.

Best wishes, Richard

We hope this will be a fun social/fundraising early evening event for all the family so book your tickets early to avoid disappointment! Ham-Shire Pigs (who will be organising the evening) will be running a tote betting system for the pig racing. It would really help our fundraising effort if we had sponsors for the 6 races of the evening. We are looking for  6 sponsors to stump up £20 each as this would go a long way towards covering the expenses of the evening, so whether you would like to have a Pig Race named in your honour (!!) or be an anonymous benefactor, please let Louise know (louise.keiller@gmx.com) and help the evening off to a flying start ! Thank you. We look forward to seeing lots of you there.

Next playground cake sale will be on Friday 9th March and will be run by Walnut class.

Junior 16 March

16 March 2012

Dear Parents

You should have received a questionnaire today asking for your views on various aspects of school life. I do hope that you will take a few minutes to fill it in and return it to either of the schools. It is so important we know the views and opinions of the people most involved with school life. We have already asked the children for their opinions about the school.

There are two types of question some are those which Ofsted use during an inspection, others are more specific to our school. Both will help us to understand how you are feeling and will give us some pointers about how we need to develop the school.

This information is only for our use and will not be shared with other authorities. I hope you will write what you really think and be specific about areas and aspects of HTPD that we could improve. It is important that we also know about the areas that you are really happy with. Please feel free to use the free writing section at the end either to develop any answer further or to raise a new subject.

Our Teaching Assistants at both sites had a training day together this week. They had training on different activities that develop the use of fine and gross motor skills. These exercises and techniques help to strengthen children’s muscles so they have the dexterity and coordination to improve their skills in sports, writing and many other activities. We greatly value the important role our committed and professional teaching assistants play in the education of your children.

Trips and special days are an integral part of your children’s educational experience at HTPD and really add value to their learning.

Year 6 had a fantastic visit to the Natural History Museum on Wednesday, a beautiful building in itself but also so full of incredible exhibits and information – every year, the children are amazed by the size of the Blue Whale!

Year 2 have been to New York this week (after they managed to get through the very rigorous passport control) as part of their Round the World topic – a good old American breakfast of bagels was a highlight.

Year 3 went back in time to Ancient Greece yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed a truly creative day; they all looked fantastic dressed up in a stunning array of Chitons!

Make sure you have a look at the web site to see the pictures!

Best wishes
Helen, Nicola and Debbie

Netball - We also played St. Joseph's this week at netball in some High 5 matches.

The Year 5 team won 14 - 1 and the Year 6's won 11 - 0. The girls all showed great versatility moving positions every quarter with some great shooting!

Good luck to the two Year 6 teams playing in the Tormead tournament tomorrow morning.

Sport Relief

As I am sure everyone will know it is Sport Relief next week with lots of fantastic things going on all around the UK. We would like to do our special bit so next week during your child’s usual PE lesson all the children in the school (and a few adults!) will be completing their own mile. Please can the children bring in any sports clothes that represent their favourite sport so that they can wear them during their mile on their PE day.  We would also like to ask you if you could kindly make a small donation that we could send to Sport Relief to boost the pot, thanks.

Read-a-thon – Journals are needed all week – 1m per page. Funds are to be divided between school reading projects and Sports Relief!

Quiz Night - tonight 8pm - tickets available on the door
HTSC Meeting - 20th March 8pm, HT Staff Room

HTPD Kayak Club for Years 4, 5 and 6  - Kayak Club will be starting up again on Thursdays after Easter, for the 6 weeks beginning Thursday the 19th April.  If your child would like to join please could you let me know by email.  There are only 18 places which will be offered to Year 6, 5 then 4 on a first come first serve basis.

Wey Kayak Club and myself willingly put a lot of time and effort into the club and we ask, that once committed, they see the course through (as others are unable to join and fill their place after the 2nd week in) and there is always a waiting list.  It is helpful to do a little background into the sport if your child is not sure about it before they "plunge" in.  And yes- they will actually get wet at some point during the course!  They do not however need to be able to swim as we wear buoyancy aids on the water. Parents are responsible for lifts to and from the club in Riverside Road, Bellfields.  In previous courses parents have arranged lift clubs amongst themselves. We start at 3.45 and pick up is 5.15. The cost of the course is around £40 per child. Tracey Dowse, HTPD Kayak Club traceyd@holytrinity.surrey.schuk

Art Classes – We are resuming the Art Club with Elena Andreva on the 16th April (3.30 – 5.00 p.m.)   The children who attended before, and new ones, are welcome. To book a place please contact Elena on 01483 560385. The cost is £100 for 10 sessions.

Art Classes will also be running at the Spike, Guildford, for 7 -12 year olds on Saturday mornings from 21st  April at 10am.  1 and 2 hour classes available for the whole term from £10 per hour, and 2-Hour Drop-In classes available from £22. Watercolours, Pastels, Chalks & Charcoal & Printing for cards & T-shirts at the end of term.  For an itinerary, booking form or more information please phone Becca Clegg (mother of Georgia in 4N & Issie in Willow) (01483) 870127, text 07796 780042 or e-mail becca.clegg@ntlworld.com . Class size strictly limited to 12.

Poppy Isaacs (3G) has lost her named, Shackleton (green) sweatshirt. It has been missing since before Half Term. Would you please check your own uniform just in case it has been swapped? Thank you.

Leo Williams lost his unnamed blue Speedo goggles at 3MG swimming on Wednesday. If you have found them please could you send them into 3MG? Thank you.

Isabella Foreman in 4N has mislaid her PE kit (all named). If found, please bring the items to the Office. Thank you.

Parents’ Group
Are you a single parent? Do you sometimes find it difficult to cope with the emotional and practical issues of being on your own? Do you wish you could talk to people in a similar situation? Having young kids is exhausting enough on its own but when you are a lone parent there are so many other elements in the mix making it even harder. Even with supportive friends and family around there is something comforting in talking to other people who understand the difficulties and who appreciate the challenges you face and who you can contact when other friends are with their "traditional families". It doesn't matter what your circumstances are but if you feel that you are often on your own and you want to meet people on an informal basis who are in a similar situation, contact Cecilie on email cecilierandall@yahoo.co.uk. Look forward to hearing from you

Junior 30 March

30 March 2012

Dear Parents,

Wow another great week of weather and at Holy Trinity Pewley Down we have certainly made the most of it.  Lots of outside learning as well as some special events.

Rosie organised the combined service to celebrate Easter at Holy Trinity Church.  This is the only time in the year when the whole school meets together in church.  It is tremendous to see nearly six hundred children singing and participating.  The theme was the Ultimate Hero – Jesus who conquered death and can take our burdens of worry and guilt.

This morning we continued the theme with a joint assembly on the downs another really moving moment with all the children fully focused and engaged.

Easter is the time we celebrate new birth and this was poignantly shown in the march of Year 2 from Pewley Down to Holy Trinity.  They had made a giant cross and covered it with prayers and messages.  This was left with their partners in year 5 who carried it up to the Downs as the centre point for our assembly.  The Year 2 then completed the journey taking it back to Pewley.

I am so pleased that HTPD is an outdoor orientated school.  The National Trust is very concerned that the nation’s children do not get outside into nature enough.  This is not the case for our children where more than 60% walk to school, up to 40% of our lessons are held outdoors, the infants go to the Wild Place on a weekly basis and the juniors have many Fluffy activities on the Downs and walking or cycling in the beautiful countryside.

I do hope you have a great Easter Holiday and that you manage to get outside with your children!  Let’s hope as well as much needed rain we also have some more lovely days.

Look forward to seeing everyone back, normal time on Monday 16th April.

Best wishes, Richard

Junior 20 April 2012

20 April 2012

Dear Parents,

I am so grateful to those of you (about  60%) who responded to the questionnaire. If you click here you can see the results. Next week we hope to send out a digest of all the additional comments that were made. The information we have gleaned from the survey is very useful to us in moving the school forward. I will be holding focus groups on the areas which have substantial disagreement. I am so pleased that only two students were not happy, but very concerned about the results for bullying and behaviour. The focus groups plus staff and governor discussion will lead to action in some of these areas.

I am particularly grateful to the group of parents who came to a meeting about self esteem and participation. I am sorry that I have not previously reported on the changes that have been made as a result of this. One big change is that all teachers are now keeping a record of Headteacher awards and times when children are chosen for events. Another change is that when we need a team for a special sporting event, e.g. this week’s Olympics team, a group of children who are not in our first football, netball or hockey squad were chosen to represent our school. We also plan to change the last day of school awards so that children in Year 6 receive a certificate which reflects their virtues and contributions to school life. All children will receive this award. We will continue to cut down on the number of sporting and other awards to individuals. The drama club held a small production at the end of last term; this was only for members who had come to that club. These are just a few of the changes which have occurred. We will continue to seek to improve in this way.

At Holy Trinity Pewley Down we really strive to be constantly listening and acting to make our school better for children and parents. Please continue to give us feedback as we pursue this task.

Best wishes, Richard

As we hit our summer sports we seem to manage to get through a lot of tennis balls! If anyone has any tennis balls that may be past their best for use on court but may still be good for practising rounders and cricket drills, please leave them at the office for us. That would be great, thanks.

Payments for Brenscombe/Preston Montford
A reminder that these are due, thank you.

Sainsburys & Tesco Vouchers  (7,800 JS and 2,500 Tesco already received with thanks.)
We are collecting these and there are collection boxes in reception.  Last year we collected over 30,000 and we managed to use these to get a lot of new equipment for the kitchen in Year 4. This year we have only received around 8,000. Sainsburys have stopped handing the vouchers out so if you have any at home, please bring them in to school ASAP.  To give you an idea: cricket bats (a set of 4) = 290 vouchers; Skipping ropes (set of 6) = 160 vouchers and a bat and ball set = 6,000 vouchers. Thank you.

Found
A set of house keys has been found outside the school. Please see the office.

Year R refurbishment
A big ‘thank you’ to FOPS who have funded the refurbishment of the Year R classrooms which took place over the Easter holidays.  Please do pop in and have a look as it has really made a difference to the children’s learning environment.

Eco Team
This week the eco team met to talk about 'Earth Day 2012' which is on Sunday April 22nd. We thought about ways in which we can help to look after our planet Earth. The eco team's ideas were that it is good to recycle our paper and plastic, we try to remember to turn off the lights when we leave a room and turn off the taps after we have used the water. We thought about how we can continue to look after our school garden and do our best to encourage lots of creatures and insects to live in our school grounds.  We then enjoyed planting potatoes in the eco house vegetable garden and we gave the eco house a good tidy. We decided that our next project would be to build a log and stone home for insects. If anyone would like to contribute any sticks or small logs for this project then please bring them to Beech Class.

Sainsbury’s vouchers
The Sainsbury’s voucher scheme has now finished for this year.  Please have a rummage in your bags and pockets and bring any vouchers into school.

As most of you are aware Rowan has neurofibromatosis (NF1), a neurological condition caused by a ‘spelling mistake’ in the genetic code. She recently finished 18 months of chemotherapy for a tumour on her optic nerve. The excellent news is that, after lots of hospital visits, the tumour is stable. The sight she has lost will not come back, but she is an amazingly confident little girl despite it all. If you are able to sponsor Auntie Jess to help The Neuro Foundation raise awareness to this common, but little known, condition, we would be really, really grateful. Any amount, little or large, will be appreciated to help us reach our target of £2000. The sponsorship page is http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JessHalliday Thank you!

Infant 27 April 2012

27 April 2012

Dear Parents,

Last week I gave out the scores for each of the questions in the recent survey.  If you did not have a chance to see them please click here.  This week we are giving a digest of the comments (available to download here). As a result of your comments there will be focus groups to look at the main areas for development.

The first focus group will be on 2nd May at 7pm at the HT site where we will be looking at how we disseminate information to you about your children.  This will include thinking about written reports and consultation evenings. I do hope some of you can come along and help us find a way of giving you the information you want, in a user-friendly form, when you want it.  I will try to keep the meeting to about an hour and a quarter.  This meeting will be in time to affect reports this summer.

Best wishes, Richard

Parking & Safety
You may be aware that one of children was involved in a road traffic accident on Cline Road, after school, last week. He is fine, but we would like to remind you all about driving and parking around both of the HTPD sites. We have noticed that many parents are ignoring the double yellow and zig zag lines and we have become increasingly concerned for the children’s safety. Please do not park in these areas. Thank you for your co-operation.

Parents’ Focus Group, Wednesday 2 May, 7.00 pm at Holy Trinity

All parents (infant and junior) are very welcome to attend the focus group led by Richard looking at reports and consultation evenings.  More details in Richard’s letter above.

Admissions September 2012

If you have a child starting school in Year R in September or a Year 2 child transferring to junior school, please ensure that you have accepted your place on-line (if you applied on-line) or returned your reply slip to school (paper applications) by next Wednesday, 2 May.

2012 Olympic Games flag project
Following the draw on Monday morning, Rocco Collinson (infants) and Polly Moon (juniors) will be representing HTPD and holding the flag at Stoke Park on 20 July.

Teacher-led clubs
Club letters have now come out via book bags.  We do have one un-named form, so if you have not received yours please come up to the office.  For children new to after-school clubs, they may bring a small, healthy snack to have before the club starts – please send these in their book bag.

Eco Team
The eco team had a busy afternoon making a bug hotel near the eco house which we are hoping will be a comfortable place for mini-beasts. The team had great fun making the bug hotel and then they settled all sorts of creatures into the hotel's leafy soil and log piles. Thank you very much to the families who contributed the logs for this project. Please see the website for pictures of the bug hotel in the making.

Parking
Please do not to park across the school gates at the end of the school day – some of our staff need to leave promptly at 3.00pm to pick up their own children from school.

Lower entrance
If you are leaving school after the lower doors have been shut at 9.00am, please ensure that they are closed securely behind you or alternatively go out through the upper doors.

Dear Parents

I’m really grateful to the groups of parents who came to the focus group on Wednesday. We had a good session talking about written reports, consultation evenings, information reported to parents and teacher expectation. Interesting ideas were suggested for all of these topics. These will now be taken to a staff meeting and I will inform you of changes which are to be made.

Already I can say that we will be making consultations confidential, changing the annual reports so that the general comments section is replaced by strengths in foundation subjects (topic, art, science, RE, music etc) and also hobbies and interests. We will make all parents aware that they can ask for numerical national levels for their children in English and Maths and any predictions for future target scores. As for expectations; I told the group that we really do have very high expectations for all students and now we will give parents the information so that they are aware of this.

In a couple of weeks we will be having the second of these focus meetings. This one will include the areas of behaviour, bullying, ‘does your child feel safe’ and who your child feels they can talk to if they have a problem. I will send out an email setting the date for that early next week. This meeting is open to all including those who have attended previous focus groups. Please feel free to come even if you don’t have a particular concern about these areas, but just want to make the school even better.

You will be interested to know that two former students have been reaching the heights in musical careers which were encouraged and nurtured at Holy Trinity. They are India May Murton (2001-2005) who did really well in getting to the semi-finals of the The Voice on BBC1 and Charlotte Cox (2000-2004) who is a finalist on Young Musician of the Year this week. Our congratulations and best wishes go to them both.

Do enjoy the long weekend – whatever the weather!

With best wishes,
Richard

Fluffy Friday 25th May
We are in the process of organising the children's choices for the next FLUFFY day. The children have made some suggestions for activities they thought parents might be willing to help with. Their suggestions are:  Chess day, table tennis tournament, sewing and embroidery, make a model or toy, paper aeroplanes, jewellery making, hairdressing and hair styling,  beautician and make-up lessons......the list goes on!  If you are able to help with any of the above, or have suggestions for a different activity, please contact Alison Tester (alisont@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk).  The day starts at 9.30, with break between 10.30 and 11 am, lunch between 12 and 1pm and a celebration assembly in the hall at 2.30 pm.

Sainsburys Vouchers
Can we make it 20,000 by next week?  We already have over 11,200!  Thank you.

HTPD Prayer Meeting
We are meeting to pray at Natalie Savage's house on Friday 11th May at 2pm. Children welcome! Contact Emma Laporte for details on 07947 712 542. Be inspired!

Room Required
Would anyone be able to help one of our Teaching Assistants who desperately needs to lodge in a room between 6-22 July?  If you have a spare room and are able to help, please contact Matt on 07854 800112.

Tables
There are four quite new and in good condition tables available for anyone who would like to collect them. We have had to replace them as in the busyness of school life the legs tend to work a bit loose. This would not be a problem in a home setting. The tables are 1.60m x 0.80m and are 0.72m high.

Parking & Safety
At about 3.00pm last Friday (27th) one of our parent’s cars was hit by a small silver car (similar to a VW Golf - 55 plate) while parked on the corner of Pewley Bank/Semaphore Road. Unfortunately the driver of the silver car did not leave her details, so if anyone witnessed the accident could they please let the Pewley office know or alternatively contact Lisa Barnard direct on 07936 796165.
Could we once again remind all parents about the need for safe and considerate parking and driving around the school sites. In particular, if everyone could stick to the unofficial one-way system (down Semapore Road) at drop off and pick up times.

School Council
Representatives from Reception year have now joined the School Council: Annie Brook and Ruben Parnell from Willow Class; Ella Randall and Freddie Kay from Hazel. This term the School Council’s project is to raise money to re-do the playground markings. So, watch this space for news of up-coming fund-raising events.

If you are unable to get to the shop or need something urgently please come up to the office and complete an order form. Thank you to Liz van Eykenhof for organising the uniform for us.

Dear Parents

I do hope that you and your families enjoyed the long weekend. The weather didn’t really lead to getting much done or going out. Philippa and I walked round the corner to Witley National Trust Centre and visited a living exhibition of Witley at War. We experienced the NAAFI Café and heard a talk about the Home Guard. We also saw pictures taken during the World Wars, when Witley and Milford Commons were covered in Army camps.

Year 3 have also been finding out about World War II. Last week they had a great trip to Henley Fort at the top of The Mount in Guildford; this gave them a great deal of knowledge about ARP Wardens and the Home Guard. The children were thrilled to see the wide variety of gas masks. This week they had an evacuee experience which started at London Road Station where they were left by their parents and ended back at school to be met by the mayor and given to their new families (luckily their own parents!). In between, they walked around Guildford seeing sites of bombed out houses and where doodle bugs landed, they met local people who told them about Guildford in wartime, including Gertrude ‘best call me Gertie and leave out the rude part!’ wonderfully played by our very own Librarian Geraldine Tame.

As well as our valuable knowledge of local and recent history, there is an underlying theme of how tragic and wasteful war is and how we should strive for peace. For this reason we also remember the Holocaust, not to point blame, but be aware that great evil can exist and we all need to be vigilant to guard against it. A lesson for all of us.

Do have a peaceful weekend.
Richard

Parking
May I ask all parents who drive to and from school to park safely and considerately at all times please?  Just recently we have had several telephone calls from our local residents to say that they have been unable to enter or leave their premises because cars, driven by our parents, have been parked across driveways.  We have also had a visit from a member of the local Community Police team this week with the same request.  Your co-operation in this matter would be much appreciated with immediate effect.

Maths Resources
Coming soon for the Summer... Maths Resource pages for parents and children to access at home.  What types of resources would you like to see on our website for maths?  Some examples...how to form numbers, times table sheets and grids, number bonds to 5, 10, 20, 100,  100 squares, useful websites?

At the start of the Autumn Term we will be running Maths Curriculum sessions for parents.  What information would you find useful?

We hope the Maths Pocket Poster booklets have been helpful for Years 3-6. There are just a handful left at £2 a booklet - available from the office.  More are on order so if you've missed out we will let you know when they arrive.  They will be available at Pewley for Year 2's as well this term.

Please email the maths team at traceyd@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk and let us know your ideas!

SATs Week – Year 6
Just a reminder for Year 6 to get some good sleep this weekend! Please remember pencils and pens and water for the brain! If your child is ill just let the office know, as usual and we can make alternative arrangements. Good luck to all.

School Uniform
Please note there is a new order form available for ordering Junior School uniform. Small sizes (5-6) are available through the Infant School and we will no longer be supplying House back packs as requested by school. This can be downloaded from the website uniform pages www.htpd.surrey.sch.uk/The-School/Parents/Uniform/Junior.aspx

Choir at Holy Trinity Church this Sunday at 9.15
Looking forward to seeing the choir this Sunday for the rehearsal of Will Todd's Anthem at 9.15am; this is before the service at 10am. Please remember to be wearing smart school uniform.  Thank you.

Head Lice
We have cases of head lice at school, please check your child and treat accordingly. For more information on how to treat visit www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Head-lice/Pages/Treatment.aspx

Sainsbury’s and Tesco Vouchers
Thank you to all of our parents who donated their Sainsbury’s and Tesco vouchers. We have collected nearly 11,500 from Sainsbury’s and 5,010 from Tesco.  An order for some sports equipment will be posted off soon!

Tables
There are four quite new and in good condition tables available for anyone who would like to collect them. We have had to replace them, as the high usage of tables in school life can, result in the legs working themselves a bit loose! This would not be a problem in a home setting. The tables are 1.60m x 0.80m and are 0.72m high.

Please could you check your pegs, bags, car, at home for Finnan Waterfield's waterproof coat!  It is royal blue/black, age 5-6, with his name in it.  Last seen on the pitch 2 weeks ago - it must be somewhere!  Many thanks. Sara 07833 732453.

Guildford Summer Festival
Every year Guildford Summer Festival brings you a whole host of activity to keep you entertained. The next Festival will take place from 1 June to 31 July 2012 and incorporate events for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Torch Relay. Take a look at the calendar for all the events, download a brochure or come and pick up your brochure from the Tourist Information Centre.

From John Redpath, a parent : I am raising funds for County School in Guildford, a secondary school that is still small enough to care and has fantastic and dedicated teachers, the problem is the building leaks/floods and the dining hall is hopelessly too small.  So I am helping to raise, along with many others, matched funding towards the refurbishment project.  The challenge is: ABSEILING OFF THE SPIRE OF GUILDFORD CATHEDRAL on 14th July 2012. Naturally you are all welcome to come and watch but even more welcome to donate towards the fund at:  http://www.justgiving.com/John-Redpath.  Thank you.

Dear Parents, Elise Close (6C) is fortunate enough to be going to Sierra Leone this half term, in support of a charity called Street Child Elise will be spending two days onsite at the children's centre in Makeni and will also complete a 5km sponsored run out in the equatorial heat.  We have been advised that any clothes for children aged 10-18 would be most gratefully received. If you have any clothes for children/ young adults of this age, suitable for a hot climate, or any unwanted toys (robust, no batteries or power source required), Elise would be thrilled to take these to the Makeni centre.  Please send in a bag marked 'Street Child - Elise Close 6C'. If your child wanted to enclose a handwritten note, I am sure it would be delightedly received too!  Many thanks, Gaby Close.

Richard

Slapped Cheek
We have had a few cases of ‘slapped cheek’ in Year R recently.  Slapped cheek is a common viral infection and the symptoms are a distinctive rash on the face, headaches, high temperature and itchy skin.  It is usually a mild condition that passes in a few days and symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol.  There is no recommended period for children to be kept away from school as slapped cheek is most contagious before the symptoms emerge.  The main risk is for pregnant women without immunity.  If you are concerned, please seek advice from your GP.

Infant 18 May 2012

18 May 2012

Dear Parents

Holy Trinity Pewley Down School has its two hundredth birthday this year. The school was originally founded in George Abbot hospital in 1812. This was just one year after the National Society had been formed to provide education for poor children throughout the country. There are now, of course many thousands of church schools but Holy Trinity was the sixth to be founded.

The school spent most of its life at the bottom of South Hill in the buildings now occupied by the short-stay school. At the start of the last century Surrey County Council took joint responsibility with the church. So the school prospered until the mid seventies when the school divided into the separate infant and junior school. We joined back together officially in 2010.

We want to contact as many former pupils as possible, especially the older ones. We have good records of the school from 1860-1920 and again from 1970-present day. We hope the last fifty years history can be filled by living memory.

We are going to celebrate the birthday during the week October 15-19th. We are also planning a high quality book about the school which should be available at Christmas. If anyone is able to help with the book; providing memorabilia and photos, typing copy, sorting through photos and archives we would be so grateful. Please let me know if you can help.

We want this to be a thanks giving to God for all his goodness to us in the past, a celebration of all that is good about the school in the present and a looking forward to a bright and exciting future – continuing to serve children of South Guildford and the villages.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
With best wishes
Richard

Jubilee Celebrations, Friday 1 June
We would like to invite grandparents (and parents are welcome too) to a Jubilee Tea Party on Friday 1 June.  Timings are:
9.00 -9.45am  - Reception Year
10.00 – 10.45am - Year 1
11.00 – 11.45am - Year 2
Could you please let your class teacher know if you are able to come so that we have an idea of numbers.  Also if you are planning to come, and have siblings in different year groups, let us know and we can arrange for one of them to pop up at the same time as the other.  Our over-arching theme for the whole school (including Holy Trinity) is to look at the decades of the Queen’s 60 year reign.  As part of this we will also be dressing up; please could Year 2 come as 90’s pop stars, Year 1 in red, white and blue and Reception year as kings and queens.

Class Photos Monday 21 May
Tempest Photography will be in on Monday to take class photos.  These will be in the same format as last year and examples are hanging in the reception area.

Friendship letters
Just to let you know that letters regarding friendship choices for classes next year will be coming home on Monday, so please check your child’s book bag.

Fluffy Friday, 25 May
Please return your completed form for Fluffy Friday, if you have not already done so.  We do have 4 un-named forms so please come up to the office if you think this may be you.

Year 2 Yearbook
A reminder that orders for the Year 2 Yearbook must be in by Friday 25 May.

Scales Project
We will be taking part in Surrey’s SCALES project (Surrey Communication and Language in Education Study).  This is the first population study of language development at school entry in the UK and will trace children’s language, educational and developmental progress from school entry to Year 3.  A leaflet explaining the project in more detail has gone out to Reception Year and there is a slip to return if you wish to opt out.

Help with a Hair Cut
Ella and Millie live in Godalming and attend Busbridge Infant School.  In 2011 Ella was diagnosed with Leukaemia and has undergone intensive chemotherapy and, if that works, is facing a bone marrow transplant.  She has been in and out of hospital for the past two months and, at the same time, her sister Millie has carried on with life at school without her sister.  A fund has been set up to raise money for Ella and Millie to give them some time together doing something that they love to give them a reason to keep smiling.  Essensuals hairdressing in Guildford (North Street, Guildford, 01483 301200) are offering haircuts for children six and under for just £10, with half of the money going directly to the Ella and Millie Fund.  No booking necessary, just turn up.

Lunch Menu Week 1

Dear Parents, Elise Close (6C) is going to Sierra Leone this half term for a charity called Street Child which runs respite centres for children aged 10-18 who lead an unsafe life on the street and aims to reunite children with long lost family. Elise will be spending two days onsite at the children’s centre in Makeni and will also complete a 5km sponsored run.  The children own nothing of their own - we will be taking out with us play equipment and educational resource. If you have any clothes for young people of this age or any unwanted (robust) toys, Elise would be thrilled to take these to the Makeni centre.  Please send in a bag marked 'Street Child - Elise 6C'. If your child wanted to enclose a handwritten note, I am sure it would be delightedly received too! Many thanks, Gaby Close.
