HTPD 27/1/17

27 January 2017

Dear parents

I have been so encouraged this week to hear from staff, children and parents about how much the children are enjoying this term. In particular, it has been wonderful to look at children’s work and talk to them about how they are making progress. They have also been keen to tell me about the inspiring learning opportunities they have been given. Whether it’s exciting trips out of school, such as Year 4’s trip to the London Science Museum or really challenging maths problems to solve, whether it’s writing about Ancient Greek myths in Year 3, or creating descriptions of icy Antarctica in their topic on exploration in Year 2, there has been so much enthusiasm! In fact Debbie worked with a group of our school councillors from Year 5 and 6 to look around the classes and see how well “a zest for learning” was on show. Even though this term is a shorter one, the children are certainly making the most of every moment!

We are looking forward to this term’s Fluffy Friday – do take a look at the different activities on offer (Infant Activities, Junior Activities). Perhaps have a conversation with your child and help them to think about doing something new that they haven’t tried before. If you’re free, do get in touch with your child’s class teacher and come in to help out.

Finally, please can I draw your attention again to an important day that we have planned on Tuesday 7th February. This marks a national event, Safer Internet Day and we will be joining in at both the infants and the juniors. With a subject such as this, we will of course be tailoring the content to the age of the children, but I’d like to encourage you all to think about this at home too. Our school policy is not to allow internet access without an adult present and we would like to suggest you support us with the same message at home as well. Please do see the attached flyer about this event. Tom Everard, Year 6 teacher and one of our safeguarding leads, will be presenting information which will be particularly useful for parents with children in Year 5 and 6, but in fact, all parents would be welcome. We are also keen to hear your ideas and concerns about internet safety. Do put it in your diary. As a whole school community working together, we are certain we can make a difference and embrace the positive aspects that the internet brings, whilst also keeping our children safe.

With best wishes

Film Club Cancellation, Thursday 2 February
There will be no Film Club next Thursday – apologies for any inconvenience.
Also, a reminder to parents and carers to collect children from clubs promptly at 4.00pm

Bedtime Story, Tuesday 7 February, 5.15 – 6pm
Children are invited to come back to school in their pyjamas, dressing gowns or onesies and bring a cuddly toy if they would like to. They should go straight to their classrooms on arrival where they will be sharing bedtime stories with their class teachers. Parents are very welcome to come to the hall where tea and coffee will be available.

Fluffy Friday, 10 February
You should have received a letter with choices for Fluffy Friday for Years 1 and 2 via your child’s book bag today. They should be returned to the school office by next Friday 3 February. Year R will be doing their own activity separately in their classrooms. We are requesting a £1 donation to cover the cost of activities.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2017
The Sainsbury’s voucher scheme started on 25 January and will run until 2 May. Please start collecting the vouchers and bringing them into school – there is a collection box upstairs near the office. In the past we have exchanged the vouchers for lots of lovely sports and cooking equipment for the children to enjoy. We are still looking for someone to help co-ordinate the scheme (essentially counting the vouchers) so please contact the office if you could help.

Daniel Delves (Beech) has lost a named pair of school trousers, age 5/6 – possibly taken home in error.

Thank You for your Cooperation
As a school community, we work very hard to maintain good relations with local residents. With that in mind, we would ask all parents who drive to school to please respect our neighbours and park considerately; paying particular attention to yellow lines and property access. Our main concern is the safety of pedestrians and particularly our children. We would also like to encourage parents to switch off their engines while stationary to limit the impact of pollution around the school. We would very much appreciate your support in this matter. Thank you.

Sainsburys Gift Card Scheme
We have an immediate vacancy to run the Sainsburys gift card scheme, which is a very satisfying job as it raises around £2,000 for HTSC each year. It takes approximately 1-1.5 hours per month to maintain the scheme with a few extra hours to finalise accounts with the HTSC Treasurer at the end of the year. Please contact Carrie Witts ( or Ros Vickerman ( if you are interested in taking this on – thank you in advance!

Cricket for ages 5-8
In conjunction with an initiative from the English Cricket Board that is focused on 5 to 8 year olds called "All Stars Cricket", Guildford Cricket Club want to offer places to youngsters in that age range at our Cricket Club for the 2017 season. They have Winter Nets starting on Sunday 29th January at the Royal Grammar School (RGS) in Guildford and have a dedicated session for the younger players from 1pm to 2pm. They have qualified ECB coaches and assistants, all DBS checked and approved, to offer a fantastic introduction to the game of Cricket. They would welcome all newcomers at the sessions at RGS in the first instance and more information can be found here:
