Dear Children, Parents and Carers,

Firstly, my weekly message to the children,

This week I had my first attempt at an online assembly – it was great to see some of the children in Year 5, all in their own homes, keen to listen and think about our theme of the week. Leading us all in a prayer was really amazing…the idea that all over Guildford there were children praying the same thing at the same time reminded me what an omniscient, omnipresent God we worship (aren’t they lovely words….they just mean He’s all knowing and in all places!). I’ll organise another assembly next week, and this time it’ll be open to children from any year group. Keep an eye out for a parentmail with the login details, but it’ll be on Wednesday morning at 10am.

I hope you enjoyed Virtual Sports Week; it was fantastic seeing all of your active photos on Twitter. Laura tells me that she received over 830 results which is very impressive; well done to everyone who took part. Over 40 of you also completed all 10 challenges...a remarkable effort, especially in the heat!

Every year group had a winner but by far the most impressive class was 4E! I think Emily joining in too must have spurred you all on! It really was a whole class effort. 4E, you are amazing!

Our Virtual Sports Day House winners were Nightingale. They won by the smallest of margins, with just a few points in it.

1. Nightingale - 332 points
2. Shackleton - 329 points
3. Mandela - 284 points
4. Keller - 269 points

All the results from the week are on the PE portal on the school website.

You’ll also find a new event explained there: “Practice Makes…” With so many of you seeing an improvement in your results after practising several times, Laura has set up some different sporty activities that you can work at over a week, with the focus being on how much you improve each day. She’s encouraging you to submit results everyday and see how you improve as the week goes by. You can also send her photos and film clips of you mastering a skill as you practise. I look forward to seeing your progress!

And now to our parents and carers:

It’s been another successful week for both children in school and for those at home. I’m so impressed by how well children are continuing to thrive in whatever circumstances and I’m delighted by the zest for learning that’s being displayed. We’re rapidly approaching the end of the term now, and although it’s unlike any other, it’ll be good to mark the end of your child’s year by receiving their annual school report. You should have received information about when each year group can collect theirs. We’ll have to miss out on the usual end of term celebrations, we won’t have final assemblies, award ceremonies or whole school church services, but I’m glad that the children in school are so cheerful and positive. They are truly “embracing the future with hope and confidence.”

For children in school, we’ll also be letting you know about end of term arrangements. Each bubble will finish in the usual rota system, but the times will be adjusted. We’ll send a parentmail next week.

I’m sure, like me, you were delighted to see the government advice about schools opening fully in September. We’re already working on plans for it to happen – and we’ll be in touch as soon as those plans are clear. In a nutshell, children will be spending their week in usual class-sized groups but not mixing with the rest of the school. There will have to be arrangements for staggering start and finish times, there’ll be a lot of handwashing, clear advice about when to self-isolate and stay at home, and it certainly won’t be quite like normal school, but we’re excited that we’ll be able to have every year group back!

With love,

Clare
